Trainee Assistant Conductor

As part of its talent development ‘Pathways Programme’, Garsington Opera is looking to recruit a Trainee Assistant Conductor to work alongside Artistic Director and Conductor Douglas Boyd, Assistant Conductor Ashley Beauchamp, and Repetiteur Lliam Paterson to form part of the Music Staff for its 2026 production of Gerald Barry’s The Importance of being Earnest (Director Jack Furness, Designer Francis O’Connor).

This is an entry level role, supporting the transition from conservatoire conducting training (or equivalent) to becoming an assistant conductor for a professional opera company. Through this process, the successful candidate should gain the experience and confidence to be ready to work professionally as a member of music staff.

Post: Trainee Assistant Conductor
Fee: £500.00 a week fee £145.00 approx. a week towards travel (equivalent to a Weekly Zone 1 – 6 Travel Card + Travel to High Wycombe)
Period: 28 May 2026 – 12 July 2026

Job Description

Trainee Assistant Director

As part of its talent development ‘Pathways Programme’, Garsington Opera is looking to recruit a Trainee Assistant Director to work alongside Director Bruno Ravella, on our 2026 Season revival production of Der Rosenkavlier by Strauss followed by working alongside Director Jack Furness and Movement Director & Assistant Director Rebecca Meltzer on a new production of The Importance of Being Earnest by Gerald Barry.

This is an entry level role. Through this process, the successful candidate should gain the experience to be ready to work professionally in roles as an Assistant Director / Staff Director in an opera house. You do not need to have previous Opera experience to apply.

Post: Trainee Assistant Director
Fee: £500.00 a week fee £145.00 approx. a week towards travel (equivalent to a Weekly Zone 1 – 6 Travel Card + Travel to High Wycombe)
Period: 13 April – 19 July 2026
Accommodation: Accommodation will be provided on the evenings of stage rehearsals when asked to attend notes and lighting sessions.

Job Description

Trainee Repetiteur

As part of its talent development ‘Pathways Programme’, Garsington Opera is looking to recruit a Trainee Repetiteur to work alongside Artistic Director and Conductor Douglas Boyd, Assistant Conductor Tess Jackson, and Repetiteur Fran Hills to form part of the Music Staff for its 2026 production of La traviata (Director Louisa Muller, Designer Christopher Oram).

This is an entry level role supporting the transition from music college environment (or similar) to professional opera house. Through this process, the successful candidate should gain the experience and confidence to be ready to work professionally as a member of music staff.

Post: Trainee Repetiteur
Fee: £500.00 a week fee £145.00 approx. a week towards travel (equivalent to a Weekly Zone 1 – 6 Travel Card + Travel to High Wycombe)
Period: 8 April 2026 – 7 June 2026 and 3, 6, 7 July TBC for the Emerging Artists Showcase.

Season Roles

As a seasonal festival, each year there are various opportunities to work at Garsington Opera both on and off the stage in a wide variety of roles. To find out more about how to apply for these opportunities, please see our Seasonal Roles page.

Work Experience Opportunities

Each year, we offer a week of intensive work experience for a limited number of young people between the ages of 16 and 18.  It’s a great chance to find out how a producing theatre works and to highlight the many career opportunities in producing and making shows, in our case particularly opera.  This year our available work experience week of 13 – 17 July 2026.

This intensive experience covers a full range of departments across the organisation, offering the opportunity to learn how a theatre/opera business works and how all departments contribute to the company’s overall delivery of Opera.  There will be opportunities to shadow various departments: Marketing, Learning & Participation, Company / Artist Management and backstage technical departments.

As part of this opportunity you will:

  • Connect with creative industry professionals across various roles in the sector
  • Discover the extensive range of career opportunities within a theatre/opera company
  • Understand and learn the key skills required in the workplace: listening, speaking, problem solving, creativity, teamwork and staying positive
