We are thrilled to announce that The Moon is Listening has been honoured with the Best Participatory Project award at the prestigious YAMawards! This collaborative initiative aims to foster global connections, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging among young people worldwide.
The YAMawards, part of the official program of JM International—the world’s largest youth music non-profit organisation—celebrates innovative projects that engage and inspire youth through music and the arts.
Judy Knowles, our Head of Learning and Participation, represented the project at the award ceremony held in BODØ, Norway, where she accepted the accolade on behalf of the team. This recognition underscores the importance of nurturing creativity and community among young individuals across the globe.
“Dawn to Dusk – The Moon is Listening is a unique participatory project connecting children from England, Italy, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon. Director Karen Gillingham and the creative team designed an opera performed almost completely by young people, the stage becoming a place of empowerment. The level of professionalism as well as the depth of the collaborative work really impressed the jury. The creative journey as well as the performance that was given at the Garsington Opera Festival are living proof that art can and should be shared with everyone.” YAMaward
Our goal within this project is to maintain an open, creative dialogue, helping people understand what unites them. This award highlights just how important The Moon is Listening is in fostering such connections.
The project was a collaborative effort led by Garsington Opera in partnership with Mascarade Opera, Learning at the Grange, The Mater Consortium, Alsama Project, Amwaj Chair, and Alfarah Choir. Together, these organisations have created a vibrant platform for young voices to be heard and celebrated.
