Insight Talk: Platée

Event details

Ahead of your visit in the summer, discover more about Platée with our insight talk combining historical context from leading researcher, writer and presenter Katy Hamilton with musical excerpts performed by singers on our Young Artists’ Programme.

The Roman gods are alive, well, and up to their usual tricks. Jupiter – a chronic philanderer – devises a plan to calm his wife Juno’s jealousies and suspicions. Opulent music, dances, sham weddings, and divine meddling follows, leaving us wondering – with whom should our sympathies lie?

Presenter, musician and researcher Katy Hamilton is one of the most sought-after speakers on music and opera and provides programme notes for many leading arts organisations and festivals. Katy will give historical context to the piece and will tell us about Rameau and his extraordinary musical world.

Musical illustration will be provided by Alvarez Young Artist Richard Pittsinger (cover Platée) accompanied on the harpsichord by Chris Bucknall.
