Senior Youth Company Members: Production Arts

The application process is now open for opportunities for young people in the following areas centred around our community opera A Trip to the Moon:

  • Stage Management
  • Design and Costume
  • Lighting
  • Sound and AV

We welcome applications from young people who are interested in one or more of the areas listed. The ability to express their interest and enthusiasm for their chosen pathway, regardless of whether they have experience, is essential. Applicants will ideally be at least 16 years old or in Year 11, however, we may consider submissions from students who are 15 years old.

This opportunity is fully-funded and there is no charge to take part. Young people should be able to work through their own initiative as well as with a team. They will need to commit to all the dates specified, but there may be scope for flexibility.

Stage Management

You will experience first-hand how an opera company works. Hands on experience working with a professional stage manager for the community opera A trip to the Moon will include all aspects of stage management, supporting rehearsals, backstage coordination, giving cues for the show, props management, blocking technique, moving set and scenery etc. You will be able to shadow Garsington’s Stage Manager for part of the professional performance of Platée.

Design & Costume

Working with various design professionals you will have an introduction to the design process for an opera learning about areas such as the storyboard, model showing, props and scenic art. You will also be able to shadow Garsington Opera’s Head of Wardrobe for part of a main stage performance of The Marriage of Figaro.

Lighting

You will experience the creation of a professional lighting design.  Led by the Lighting Designer on A Trip to the Moon and Garsington Opera’s lighting team you will experience how the designer works with the creative team to create the lighting, atmosphere and time of day for the production.  You will discuss the creative process, responding to the text, directed action and the need for visibility.  There will be hands of experience of rigging, focussing of lights and the opportunity to learn how the advanced lighting console controls the system on different projects. There will be the opportunity to assist with the set-up and shadow the lighting team for the professional performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Sound & AV

You will experience the creation of a professional sound design in opera. Led by Garsington Opera’s Head of Sound and AV you will experience how the technical team works with the musical staff to support and blend the acoustic sound with subtle amplified reinforcement.  You will discuss the creative process and the need for audio clarity.  There will be hands of experience of rigging and the opportunity to learn how the varied systems of radios, foldback, conductor monitors and show relay, support and enhance the production.
